Francois van Coke – Vocals and Guitar
Wynand Myburgh – Bass
Justin Kruger – Drums
Van Coke and Myburgh grew up in Bellville and have known each other from a very young age. Their mutual passion for music led them to become the best of friends. Over the years they have been involved in various music projects and bands together, of which Fokofpolisiekar is the most well known.
Fokofpolisiekar has revolutionised Afrikaans rock music by challenging and shifting rigid Afrikaans mindsets. Controversial as they are perceived to be, Fokofpolisiekar has written themselves into the history books of Afrikaans Music with their fiery reign of excellent musicianship, relevant intelligent lyrics and larger than life live performances. FPK has won numerous awards including a SAMA for Best Afrikaans Rock album for “Swanesang” and they have opened commercial doors for Afrikaans rock music by being the first Afrikaans band to have tracks play-listed on national commercial radio station 5fm.
In 2007 Fokofpolisiekar decided to take a deserved break. This break period gave Van Coke and Myburgh the opportunity to express their mutual musical interests and the two started writing songs together for the first time in years. With Van Coke on guitar and Myburgh on bass the two created rock songs that told the stories of their lives and their experiences over the past year. Stories of endless parties, binge drinking, fights, the connection they have with close friends and living in Cape Town.
Justin Kruger is no newcomer to the family. He stood in for Jaco ‘Snakehead’ Venter (Fokofpolisiekar drummer) after an accident in 2006 in which Jaco broke his arm. Justin also recorded with Fokofpolisiekar on the first ‘Swanesang’ session in March 2006.
Album
Van Coke Kartel`s debut album (self titled) was released at end of November 2007 At Mercury Lounge in Cape Town. The album was recorded at Bellville Studios and produced by Theo Crous (Springbok Nude Girls, Kobus!).
Fokofpolisiekar band member Hunter Kennedy (guitarist) and Taxi Violence singer George Van Der Spuy joined Van Coke Kartel in the studio with the aim to add more of a collective feel to the album. Hunter co-wrote and recorded guitar and vocals on the track Buitenkant II and George sang on September Fools. Theo Crous also played additional guitars and sang backup vocals.
