A few weeks ago an old performing friend of ours, Gaëtan Schmid (Dogs Bollocks), popped into the Peak offices for lunch – we love doing lunch with the artists, because seeing a famous personality dribbling salad dressing down their chin reminds us all that they too are human – and to tell us more about his new show/performances piece called Rumpsteak!
Last night Angie and Jamie went through to the Kalk Bay Theatre to see for themselves just how sizzling and hot Rumpsteak really is. And this morning they were gushing about how sexy Gaëtan is on stage; how fit he is to perform as all the characters in the piece; and how they all feel much more confident ordering those universally accepted French items on menu’s around the world! I received a press release from Rhythm Records this morning regarding what I am sure is going to be a classic CD/DVD release! Bellville Rock City is a compilation that every South African rock lover is going to have to have in their collection, and one that is going to make Cape Town proud! Everyone says that Johannesburg is the centre of South Africa’s music industry, but this just shows that we will always be the Mother City - and we all know mama knows how to rock!
Featuring bands like Fokofpolisiekar, Springbok Nude Girls, aKING, New Holland and a host of other bands that all have their origins on that side of the “boerewors curtain”. The compilation has 13-tracks of music, music videos, a 30-minute documentary, a 48-page booklet with photos and the musicians personal accounts, and even some MP3’s that have never been released on CD before. It was with great sadness that I heard this morning that one of South Africa’s most famous daughters, Miriam Makeba, passed away last night after performing her last concert in Italy. News reports state that she collapsed back stage after performing in Naples at the Castel Volturno, whose audience will certainly never forget the night that an African queen gave all at a show, after which she could just give no more.
She will always remain a legend, not only in South Africa, but the world over, as a classic performer whose life was is as much a part of this countries history, as her music is part of our collective culture. Continue reading ‘Ma Makeba, a South African voice lost’
I was very excited to hear that Kesivan Naidoo was awarded the Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year 2009 for Jazz on Tuesday evening. This prestigious award recognizes and honours young artists who are making an impact in the South African music scene, but who have not yet received the deserved acclaim.
Last month I interviewed Kesivan for South African Drum & Percussion mag, and am pleased to say that I was fully justified in labeling him as one of the brightest shining Jazz stars in the country at the moment. This award proves that I am not alone in thinking this. So big congratulations go out to Kesivan – exciting stuff! We returned from the French island of Mayotte last week, having tour managed a South African contingent of top artists at a cultural 7-day music festival sponsored by the French government. Everyone was looking forward to days spent on an Indian Ocean paradise island, but we were sadly horrified at the treatment the South African’s received from the festival organization.
With South African icons Mandoza, Busi Mhlongo, Thandiswa Mazwai, Amampondo, and new-comer DJ Castro with one of Africa’s top percussionists Mabi Thobejane, our group was subjected to a mini-riot, transport and accommodation issues, bad flight planning, very little English being spoken, and worst of all lies about payments. This is a nightmare story that should be read as a warning to all in the music industry! Continue reading ‘SA music festival nightmare on island of Mayotte’
