Kwani Experience is one of the success stories of South African music – it’s a cross over kind of potjiekos of so many different genres and styles that make it really funky and hot! It’s a Jazz sound that embraces Traditional beats, throwing in a pinch of Poetry and Hip Hop to flavour, to add to the meatiness of Soul and Urban Funk. And all this makes Kwani Experience really South African. Really African.
So a few months ago when xenophobia was the word on the tip of the countries tongues, Kwani was one of the groups that stood and made a stand against it. They started a campaign dubbed “Live without fear”, in reaction to what they themselves feel as an accepted attitude of “doom and gloom”. And what better to convey a positive message than through music!
“The campaign was inspired by our new single ‘Chant down fear’. The overall theme of the song is overcoming fear, because fear is a barrier to freedom,” says the band’s lead rapper/poet Kwelaboge “P.O.” Sekele, “we suffer from a lot of societal fears: we live in fear of crime, we live behind high walls; we fear the pursuit of our dreams; we fear failure; we fear being ourselves.”
6-piece Kwani Experience has recently returned from another European tour, that has seen them add stamps in their passports for countries like France, Belgium, Netherlands, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and of course African countries such as Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Lesotho and Cape Verde. This is all a great platform to spread their wings internationally promoting their second album LIVE AFTER BIRTH and spread the message of their social campaign ‘LIVE WITHOUT FEAR’.
So catch Kwani Experience tomorrow night at House of Nsako, 101 High Street Brixton with DJ Bob. Entrance fee is R60, and Kwela has told me that it is going to be a night fun-filled funky music! Wish I could be there!
In the meantime, or to whet your appetite for another Kwani experience, here is Mess in the Kitchen… See? I wasn’t far off with the potjiekos…

Greetings
Im all geared up to see Kwani Experience in durban this fri.saw the poster and I have heard many rumours but i cant seem to locate any factual statement by the group actually telling us about the situation with the femaile lead singer.
Did they think we wouldnt notice when they changed her? I have an orginal cd of Mudulanf funk and i feel that as a fan, im kinda left in the dark.
Can someone from the KE please give an offical status on the situation with the femaile lead singer. I am aware of the “story” as it were but check it out from my angle - I was not aware of KE until they released they first album. I dont live in Jozi and am exposed to the music existing underground ( un released artists). So i rush to buy they album and i love it. They coming to durban this fri and im still stoked but as a fan i feel like im agreyhound bus- where they just change the driver and the hostess girl without letting you know or acknowledging you.
Hey Silondile - thanks for stopping by. I have contacting KE, and am hoping that they will come and comment here, and set your mind at rest!
Keep yourself well!
Hola Silondile.
Thanks for noticing. The old vocalist left the band about a year ago and the new one has been around since then..we got some media coverage for that..t.v., print and online but i guess that wasn’t enough. Apologies if you feel betrayed. Hope to see you on Friday so we can chat more.
Have a crazy day!
