We get lots of strange emails during the course of a week, but that is the easiest to delete in this modern age of the internet. But it wasn’t always so, and of course in the good old days we used to have wait for at least 7-days for a real letter to arrive at its destination, which meant that if you were waiting for a reply – it could be a good 2 to 3-weeks before you got it. After all it takes time to sit and write it, and then the spelling mistakes!
Today we opened our post office box and there, much to our surprise and delight found the following brown envelopes addressed to Mr. Madiba Mandela, and Mr. Nelson Mandela – all at our PO Box address.
Damn! I had no idea the good man lived in Table View! Never mind at my address!I thought it was a joke, till I reread the sender’s address and realized that both envelopes were from a primary school in Botswana, and were sent by 7 and 8year old kids.
We haven’t opened them, and have contacted the Nelson Mandela Foundation to get the right address to send them to, but I have a feeling that they are both filled with belated birthday wishes for Madiba! They are quite thick, so I imagine there must be quite a few hand-drawn cards and pictures, which I am sure he will enjoy.
I hope someone replies to the kids and thanks them for their efforts! I just wonder how they arrived on my doorstep!
