Filmmakers Against Racism - appealing for free!

Filmmakers Against RacismI received an urgent appeal from a friend Lianne Cox to support a new initiative called Filmmakers Against Racism, in response to the xenophobia that has gripped the conscience of our country.

This is not a time to wait for other people to lead the way; its not something that the world can solve for us – it is us, the people of South Africa, the diverse people who make up this portion of Africa, that need to lend a hand to make a stand. To show that we are not the uncaring animals who have dominated the world news. Here follows their appeal: Continue reading ‘Filmmakers Against Racism - appealing for free!’

Go back to your roots to see the way forward

Our Freedom to celebrate!I have been very fortunate in that I have over the years developed a passion for world music – that term that tries to categorise music from 90% of the world. But for this post, we will just call it that – music of the world.

Amampondo the band 2005Most of this category is filled with traditional music; music that has been refined by cultures; that defines cultures; and gives us the ability to be touched by the sounds and melodies that have been a part of a peoples lives either for many many years, or as part of their current cultural evolution. And I think that this is where we need to go back to, to find greater understanding of the cultures they represent. Continue reading ‘Go back to your roots to see the way forward’

Taking SA music to the people - Greg Georgiades

Greg live @ the CTIJF 2007I received this note from Greg Georgiades, updating us on his movements and some of the projects he has been busy with. It’s always great hearing that musicians are doing what they are passionate about, and in this modern age that is not only about making music. It’s just as much making sure that the music is heard, far and wide. So here is some of Greg’s news:

Greetings all!

Vivid Africa CD cover… from deep cyberspace at our fingertips! This has indeed been an enjoyable month of varied and exciting live shows played with wonderful musicians in front of really ’spirited’ audiences around the country. It is these audiences that give one a real glimpse of the future of SA music… ‘live’ audiences wanting a ‘live’ music experience, both feeding off each other with creative purpose and fun till musicians and audience become one big ‘band’… Certainly good to hear that ‘live’ music is the way things are going these days… it sure beats the ‘dead’ one hands down!… with the added bonus of selling CD’s/DVD’s and other merchandise directly to an eager audience… up close and personal. Babu flies high with Up Roots

Babu CD Up RootsLast Friday we excitedly went off to collect our complimentary tickets to the CD launch of one of Peak Performances most exciting musical finds so far this year, with Babu.

Their CD, titled Up Roots, is a coming together of the snippets I’ve received from them as part of their promotional EPK, and when I first got bitten during my allotted 15 minutes as a ‘press blogger’ at this years Cape Town International Jazz Festival. I can tell you now, that its so much more than I expected, that I’m even more pleasantly surprised now, than I was! Continue reading ‘Babu flies high with Up Roots’

Music doesnt know xenophobia

Babu Launch inviteIt’s a chilly Friday in Cape Town and we are looking forward to keeping warm near the fire-place this weekend. Of course there is very exciting rugby happening tomorrow with the Super 14 semi-finals, but first we are off to enjoy the launch of Babu’s CD Up Roots tonight at the Sea Point SABC Auditorium, starting at 20h00!

Rouvanne & Pops 2006In Sandton there is another show on the go (tonight and tomorrow) that I think is drawing lots of attention; Ancestral Grooves is a production that is once again showcasing Southern Africa’s traditional music fusing with Western instruments, and features the Mzantsi Traditional Orchestra (SA’s only traditional orchestra). It first caught my eye because our long time friend Pops Mohamed has been involved in the show, and also performs in a number of the songs. Continue reading ‘Music doesnt know xenophobia’
