1st SA Blogger to get CTIJF Press Pass

Cape Town International Jazz FestivalI’m pretty chuffed. I received an email yesterday to confirm that I am going to the 9th Cape Town International Jazz Festival on a full Press Pass, thereby, as far as I know, becoming the 1st South African blogger to receive one for the festival. Not that I want to be the regular journalist – don’t get me wrong! But I am very chuffed that I at least am being acknowledged as giving a point of view that can be taken into account!

Madala KuneneLenny and I were there last year with Robert Trunz on MELT Record Label passes because so many of our friends were performing. But this year that wasn’t possible, and so we contacted Thompson N Team and requested passes. They have never issued one before, so had to first check out my blog to confirm that I’m not just full of sh1t!

Skwatta KampSo we will be going through on Friday and Saturday night, checking out some of the internationals, but of course checking out local acts such as Babu, Jimmy Dludlu & C Base Collective, Zimbabwean Oliver Mtukudzi, Skwatta Kamp & Zola (ja – I know it’s a Jazz Festival, but we’re African and can do what we want!), Gavin Minter with the Mother City Jazz Orchestra and The Soul Brothers.

Madala’s crowd 02It’s a pretty hectic festival with 40 artists performing over 2 days, and sometimes you have to sacrifice certain artists if you want more than just a snippet of someone you enjoy. But it’s a festival – and a bloody good one at that. Never mind the fact as I said last year, and it has been confirmed by News24, that the CTIJF is the 4th best in the world! I mean, is that not cool, or what? All those folk who say that we can’t handle our sh1t… I thumb my nose up to you!

So there will be a number of festival updates coming through over the next week – I am going to hook up with Wolfgang Koenig from Radio Multikulti and get some close-ups of the artists that tickle my fancy.

That’s totally awesome. I was actually reading about the event last night and am very keen to attend!

Shot Chris - I am pretty chuffed! Last year was very cool, and with so many choices of groups to watch, its kind of being like a kid in a candy store/me in a hardware store! Exciting stuff!

There is a free concert on Greenmarket Square starting at 17h00 tomorrow…

Or like a fat kid with cake ;)

I’ve started looking around online for a jazz newsletter to subscribe to. I really want to start attending more jazz events. I normally go to the Green Dolphin, but there must be more places, such as the Grandwest place. I looked around your site last night in fact as well as a few other events places, but couldn’t find anything comprehensive..

I dont know of a comprehensive Jazz newsletter myself - pretty cool idea for someone to set-up, but I can recommend you try out Manenbergs @ the V&A too.

    Classic!

I will have a google around for some more information on the place - sounds good, nothing better than a new place to check out - thanks!

    Hey Chris,

You ought to check out Mpumi Dhlamini’s debut album ‘Combined Elements’. I think it’s a great buy. He’s a brilliant musician and composed some awesome songs..

    Trust me, you’ll enjoy it!
