Africa’s grandest gathering for the love of music

Oliver Mtukudzi speaks to the crowdThe 9th Cape Town International Jazz Festival is over and Cape Town breathed an exhausted sigh of satisfaction on waking up to a stunning Sunday in the Mother City. We were exhausted from running from show to show, at each of which the vibe just forced us to want to dance! Ask anyone who was in Kippies for Oliver Mtukudzi, or who got funky with Zolani Mahola & the Kolo Novo Movie Band.

Zamajobe & Lee Ritenour live I was in the middle of writing a second live post from a quiet balcony at the convention centre when Wolfgang came to tell me Zamajobe was going to be appearing and that I shouldn’t miss it. He told me about how Zamajobe had met 17-Grammy nominee Lee Ritenour, and so I packed-up and headed down to Mannenberg’s stage to watch his story unfold. Skwatta Kamp blows through Cape Town (IJF)

The SponsorsI felt pretty cool last night – or rather early this morning – sending off my first live post from the Cape Town Convention Centers Media Lounge, which has been set up for the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. The lounge has all necessary facilities to enable live updates, but I am not sure how many of the journalists there last night are using it to its full potential. Maybe they should come and hang out at a 27 Dinner, or get to one of Dave Duarte’s Nomadic Marketing programmes to get up to speed!

Cape Town beautyCape Town was on her best behaviour last night. While the wind had been pumping for some time (feels like all summer) Capetonians know that the Foreshore can be a scary place when the South Easter sweeps our streets clean! But it was a beauty! Perfect weather for music and a massive audience to be able to enjoy it! Continue reading ‘Skwatta Kamp blows through Cape Town (IJF)’

Live update from the CTIJF’s Media Lounge!

Cape Town International Jazz Festival 2008We are just sitting down, waiting for Skwatta Kamp to hit the Basil ‘Manenberg’ Coetzee stage, and so I though I would send through a live update! It’s not every day I can keep it coming live!

Jimmy Dludlu CTIJF 2008 We had a few highlights that we were looking forward to, but the biggest surprise that we had, arrived was from totally unexpected place. I knew Wanda Baloyi was a big voiced lady who would thrill in her soulful jazzy way. We went down to the new stage that the CTIJF has put on to see the Kolo Novo Movie Band, with Freshlyground’s Kyla Rose and guest staring Zolani Mahola – it was pretty cool. Jimmy Dludlu sounds so lekka live, and of course Zimology was a aural feast, but that wasn’t the surprise. Continue reading ‘Live update from the CTIJF’s Media Lounge!’

Honouring South African women through art

Madosini Size: 110 x 110 cmLianne Cox, a photographer and film-maker who has done such valuable work for MELT over the years, has started an exceptional project with the aim of uplifting women in the rural areas, and nurturing their role as holders of the cultural identity, before modernization pushes their collective memory too far back for future generations to remember.

Through her photography she has created art pieces that tell the story of the power that these women hold in their communities, and out of the respect that she has for them as mothers of this country. Continue reading ‘Honouring South African women through art’

I feel like dancing!

Jasper in the CDsWe’re off to collect our press passes a little later for this weekend’s Cape Town International Jazz Festival, and will then be hooking up with Wolfgang Koenig and shadowing him around.

I still aim to know just a portion of what he knows, who he all knows, by the time I grow up, and definitely want just a portion of his CD collection! Floor to ceiling, wall to wall, Wolfgang has a more impressive collection than even Musica! And still he knows where to find each CD in the collection, and who played on it. That’s impressive! (That’s Jasper in Wolfgang passage in Berlin back in 2004) Continue reading ‘I feel like dancing!’
