Last night’s aKing launch at The Assembly was big! The band came on stage in front a large expectant crowd of Rockers of all ages; long haired ones; short haired, messy-haired, greasy and just-out-of-the-hairdresser haired (generally they all had lots of hair!).
From the moment the band stepped on stage, the crowd surged forward and stayed grinding as close as they could get.
But. And it’s a bit of a bitching but! The sound did not do the group justice. I just couldn’t hear the same sound that I know aKing produces, and have listened to so much from their CD Dutch Courage. I don’t know if it is the venue, or the sound engineers – but it was not up to scratch. Something like that can make or break a band – especially at their launch party, so that was a great pity. Though, I do have to admit, thankfully the audience already knew the words to the songs, and so were singing along at all the right places!
It was also very, very hot inside, and even though there were a couple of electric fans (and I am not talking about the sexy students in some tiny little pieces of material), it didn’t make it any easier for either the band or the audience to really get into the music. Outside the heavens opened up, and almost in sympathy with all of us sweaty people, filled the air with thunder and lightening. So there was relief to be had – just far away from where the action was going down.

So, yes, I was disappointed with last nights show, but it had little to do with the band itself. Getting into my car I popped their CD into the player and, dodging flashes of light and ducking under Mother Earths added drum-rolls, felt the music all the way home.
UPDATE: I was very pleased to hear that The Assembly’s air-conditioners have been set up to cool their music hungry fan as of March. Good thing.
